Unexpected scholarship helps ASU student build a new future

When Mario Ortega Ocampo walks across the stage at Arizona State University Polytechnic to receive his degree in Mechanical Engineering, he won’t just be celebrating academic success. He’ll also be celebrating perseverance, transformation, and the power of a community that believed in him when he needed it most.

Mario, a senior at ASU, is a proud recipient of a scholarship from the Desert Mountain Scholarship Fund, a life-changing opportunity made possible by the generosity of the Desert Mountain community in Scottsdale. As a component fund of the Arizona Community Foundation, the scholarship is more than just financial support. It pairs students with mentors from the community, people who don’t just fund education, but walk alongside these students with wisdom, encouragement, and real-life experience.

And for Mario, that’s made all the difference.

Overcoming obstacles to persevere

Mario’s path to college wasn’t a straight line. After graduating from high school, he did what many young men in his community do: he went into construction. “Traditionally, men in my family don’t go to school,” he says. “We go into trades or construction. I didn’t complain, I knew what was expected.”

But Mario had always carried something deeper, words from elementary school teachers who saw his spark and told him he’d do something special one day. “Those words stuck with me,” he says. “Even when I was bullied for being held back in second grade. I didn’t want to be that kid. I put in the work to prove it.”

It was on a construction site under the brutal Arizona sun that Mario’s future came into focus. “A man in a suit and hard hat walked onto the site,” he said. “Everyone respected him, and he spoke to me kindly. He was in and out in 10 minutes, but that moment changed me. I didn’t want to be this guy. I wanted to be that guy.”

Mario’s educational journey began at Phoenix College, but it wasn’t easy. “I didn’t make it through my first semester. I wasn’t ready,” he admits. But something inside wouldn’t let him quit. He returned. Fought through doubt. Passed every math course the college offered. Then, just as things were turning around, he lost his brother.

“That beat me up inside. I didn’t know if I could keep going,” Mario said. “But I grew up watching Rocky. I kept thinking, Mickey, get up. I heard my brother’s voice saying, ‘Don’t give up.’ So, I didn’t.”

About a month later, while dealing with the loss of his brother, he lost his grandfather and passed Calculus III.

“My grandfather always taught me that no matter how successful you are, life will still happen,” Mario says. “You have to be ready for that.”

A life-changing scholarship

Mario knew he didn’t want just any degree; he wanted a degree he could use and love. With his math skills, creativity, and technical mind, Mechanical Engineering was a perfect fit. But ASU wasn’t financially within reach.

“I didn’t want to be $80,000 in debt. I had to take time off to raise money. I applied for every scholarship I could, including the Desert Mountain Scholarship.”

Then, the email came. He was awarded the scholarship and could attend ASU.

“I almost broke down in tears at work. I didn’t even tell anyone that night. It was the day before my birthday. I thought, finally. I get to make a choice. I don’t have to settle.”

Desert Mountain’s scholarship program goes beyond writing a check. Each recipient is matched with a mentor, a member of the Desert Mountain community who offers encouragement, life advice, and accountability.

For Mario, that mentor is George.

“We meet up for lunch. He gives me advice. When I succeed, I tell him. I know his wife, Sandra, and they know my nephews. They’re like family. George heard my story in the interview and wanted to mentor me. He’s been such a blessing.”

Building a legacy

Mario’s story isn’t just his own; it’s a legacy he’s building for others. As the godfather of six nephews without their fathers, Mario wants to pass on the stability and love he received from his dad, a groundskeeper at Desert Mountain.

“I want to give them the childhood I had. I was blessed with a good father. I want them to know they’re not alone.”

Mario isn’t stopping at graduation. He’s considering multiple paths such as civil engineering, developing biomedical devices like prosthetics. And he has received an internship offer from a prestigious medical institution.

“When I see where I’m at, I think, I wouldn’t be here without the scholarship. And George always tells me I would have done it.”
