A Legacy of Leadership: Anna María Chávez Honored by Girl Scouts
Leadership isn’t just about a title; it’s about innovation, impact, and inspiring others to make a difference. These are the values the Arizona Community Foundation (ACF) champions, and they are embodied by President & CEO Anna María Chávez, who was recently named one of the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona’s “90 Women of Honor.”
This recognition is part of Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona’s 90th-anniversary celebration, paying tribute to influential women who have made a lasting impact in their communities and fields. It’s an honor that celebrates leaders who inspire the next generation.
This award resonates, not just because of Anna María’s incredible career, but because of her personal history. Her journey with the Girl Scouts helped shape the leader she is today.
A Change Maker for Arizona
The Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona selected Anna María for the “Change Maker” category, a distinction that recognizes women who are at the forefront of social justice, advocacy, and philanthropic leadership. This acknowledges a career dedicated to building stronger communities and empowering others.
“Anna María embodies the power of service-driven leadership,” said Charley Freericks, Chair of the ACF Board of Directors. “Her career has been defined by expanding opportunity, strengthening communities, and elevating voices that deserve to be heard. This recognition from the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona is a meaningful reflection of her character and her impact and an extra special honor given her leadership of the Girl Scouts.”
For over 25 years, Anna María has transformed organizations spanning education, government, technology, and the nonprofit sector. Her path of service is a testament to her commitment to community. Growing up in Eloy as the daughter of Mexican-American parents, she learned the importance of giving back from an early age.
Her journey includes service in the Clinton Administration, senior roles for two Arizona Governors—Jane Hull and Janet Napolitano—and executive leadership positions at national organizations. She has served as the CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA and the CEO of the National School Boards Association. Most recently, before joining ACF, she was the Chief Impact Officer at the EdTech company Encantos.
From Girl Scout to National Leader
“Girl Scouts helped shape who I am,” shared Chávez. “To be recognized among so many extraordinary women—especially here in my home state—leaves me deeply humbled. I’m proud to stand with an organization that continues to empower girls with the skills, confidence, and resilience to lead.”
In 2016, Fortune magazine named her one of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders. In 2021, Forbes recognized her as one of its Top 50 Over 50 Women Leaders. These awards highlight a career defined by a visionary approach to community advancement and a relentless drive to create positive change.

Since joining the Arizona Community Foundation in February 2023, Anna María has brought her dynamic vision and energy to ACF’s statewide mission. Under her guidance, ACF is expanding its focus on innovating collaborative philanthropy, strengthening local partnerships, and supporting initiatives that improve the quality of life for all Arizonans.
The Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona will honor the “90 Women of Honor” throughout their anniversary celebration, showcasing leaders in fields from STEM and the arts to philanthropy and community service.
