ACF of Yavapai County commits $110,000 in matching funds in response to COVID-19

The Arizona Community Foundation of Yavapai County has announced that it will match the first $110,000 in gifts to its Yavapai County COVID-19 Community Response Fund, dollar-for-dollar, to assist nonprofit organizations and community groups in our community who are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The community response fund will support the health and well-being of our friends and neighbors most directly affected by the COVID-19 ,” said Carol Chamberlain, Regional Director, ACF of Yavapai County. “While we remain hopeful that preventative measures will minimize the spread of the outbreak in Yavapai County, the time to act is now.” 

Gifts to this fund will be restricted to support local nonprofits facing an increased demand for services from clients and communities as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. ACF of Yavapai County is committed to working with other funding partners and community collaborators to move resources quickly and adapt to evolving community needs in order to support gaps not covered by state or federal relief funding. All contributions will be distributed to nonprofit organizations swiftly as needs arise.

Local nonprofits in need of financial support in response to the spread of COVID-19 are encouraged to visit azfoundation.org/Covid19Grants.

Earlier this month, the Arizona Community Foundation established a statewide fund to support nonprofits as they serve those most vulnerable to the economic and health-related impacts caused by the pandemic. Since its establishment, the fund has doubled in size to over $1 million, thanks in large part to a generous $500,000 gift from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation last week. As the local affiliate of ACF, ACF of Yavapai County is able to tap into these statewide resources, while ensuring local donations support needs within our service area.

Four-hundred local students attend Cash for College

The annual Cash for College Scholarship Awareness Night brought together over 30 scholarship providers and 400 individuals interested in learning more about opportunities for community college, traditional four-year universities, and vocational certifications. This was the most highly attended Cash for College since the event’s inception five years ago. In partnership with Yavapai College, the event aims to increase awareness of financial support available to both traditional and non-traditional students.

The Arizona Community Foundation is the largest private provider of scholarships in the state and the application portal will open on January 1, 2020. ACF of Yavapai County Elects Board of Advisors

The Arizona Community Foundation of Yavapai County’s Board of Advisors recently elected William Arnold, Lorna Galeano, and Mark Kille to the board. Current board of advisor Jenna James was elected Chair and current board of advisor Dawn Wasowicz was elected Vice Chair. New advisors and officers began their term on April 1, 2019.

“We are delighted to have such a depth of experience and knowledge on our Board of Advisors and we welcome our new members to this great body,” said Jenna James, newly-elected Chair of the ACF of Yavapai County Board of Advisors.

William Arnold, PhD is a retired communications professor from Arizona State University, where he also served as the Director of Gerontology. An author and mentor, William currently serves as Chair of the Friends of the Prescott Public Library Board of Directors. William holds a PhD in communication from Penn State University. He and his wife are retired and live in Prescott.

Lorna Galeano is a Senior Administrator for Yavapai-Prescott Indian Tribe (YPIT). A Prescott native, she has worked for the Tribe in various administrative roles over the past 20 years and recently served on the YPIT Board of Directors. Lorna was awarded the Tom Bragg Memorial Achievement Award for her volunteer work with the National Diabetes Association.  

Mark Kille owns and operates Mingus Mountain Law Group PLLC. He is an injury lawyer and has experience in all types of litigation, including arbitration, mediation, and trial. As a member of the Volunteer Attorney Program, he provides legal guidance to those who are unable to afford an attorney. Mark is also a former member of the Prescott Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors. He holds a JD from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Jenna James is the Executive Director of the Harold James Family Trust and serves on the board for the Prescott Unified School District Education Foundation. She was a middle- and high-school English teacher for six years, and received a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from University of Redlands.

Dawn Wasowicz was born and raised in Prescott and is from a fifth-generation ranching family in Yavapai County. She owns Rafter Eleven, a local tasting experience that serves wine, coffee, olive oil, and spices. Dawn has been involved in United Families for six years, served on a Business Board for Fain Signature Group for ten years, and has been a member of Prescott’s chapter of P.E.O. for over 20 years.
