Essen Otu elected to ACF Board of Directors

The Arizona Community Foundation’s Board of Directors recently elected Essen Otu to the board. Mr. Otu was elected during the Board’s September meeting.

Otu serves as the Senior Director for Diversity and Community Affairs at Mountain Park Health Center, a medical facility serving 95,000 patients in metro Phoenix.

In his current role at Mountain Park, Essen is responsible for creating strategies that lead to a sustaining, inclusive and welcoming environment for all Mountain Park stakeholders ensuring the organization is embedded and trusted in the communities they serve.

Prior to his role at Mountain Park Health Center, Otu served as the Special Assistant to the Superintendent and Human Resources Department at Seattle City Light/National Urban Fellows where he worked on strategic alliances with fellow utilities, consulted on leadership development programs, and participated in national recruitment and HR policy development. Previously, Otu worked for the Arizona Governor’s Office for Children, Youth and Families as a program administrator.

“Essen brings a significant amount of experience in both healthcare and philanthropy. His understanding of our community and his special focus on diversity and inclusion will be a tremendous asset to the ACF Board,” said Shelley Cohn, chair of the ACF Board of Directors. “His unique set of professional and leadership skills and his past work as the founder of Real Engagement through Active Philanthropy (REAP), a fund at ACF, will make him a valuable board member.”

Otu is a graduate of the Valley Leadership Institute, a Phoenix Business Journal 40 Under 40 awardee, a current Piper Fellow, and is the past Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Vitalyst Health Foundation. He was also appointed to the Reinvent Phoenix Gateway District Steering Committee.

Essen received his undergraduate degree from Arizona State University and a Master in Public Administration through the National Urban Fellows Program at Baruch College in New York. Otu resides in Phoenix with his wife Allison and his three daughters, Sahara, Amel and Aya.
