Description

Please join us for the opening reception of Deliberately Retrospective at the Karen Work Seleznow Gallery at ACF.  Watercolorist Debra Edgerton uses her technical ability to tell stories through her artwork. The light of the paper shining through even the darkest areas of her paintings, luminous and saturated layers reference her African-American and Japanese heritage. Her works ask the viewer to ponder how our identities are informed by our histories, heritage, culture, and environment.

The works in this exhibition include various bodies of work, in retrospective fashion, tracking the artist’s career. Courageously autobiographical, the paintings and objects Edgerton creates ask the viewer to become a collaborator, a willing participant in the interpretation and enjoyment of the artwork. Her pieces are all infused with dissimilar elements, working together to create a whole, finding ways to co-exist even when there is a feeling of dislocation, re-defining how we see.

Debra Edgerton, is a senior lecturer for the School of Art at Northern Arizona University. She received her MFA degrees at both the San Francisco Art Institute and Vermont College of Fine Art in Painting and Interdisciplinary Art. She is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, and a lifetime member of the Transparent Watercolor Society.
