Statement on the U.S. Supreme Court decision to uphold the DACA program
The Arizona Community Foundation applauds today’s decision by the United States Supreme Court to uphold the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. As Arizona’s largest private provider of college scholarships, ACF has supported thousands of Arizona students with DACA status on their path to college and career. These students have been living in Arizona and attending Arizona schools for most of their lives, studying to become college ready, working, and paying Arizona taxes. Today’s decision enables these Arizonans to continue contributing to our communities now and in the future.
Though today’s decision provides a measure of stability for Arizona’s DACA students, we remain concerned that these students are burdened with higher tuition rates at our state’s universities and community colleges than their peers. These DACA students understand a college degree will lead them to higher paying jobs, enable them to buy homes, pay taxes and make Arizona more attractive to employers. ACF encourages all Arizonans and our state and federal elected officials to engage in thoughtful dialogue about policies that will provide certainty and equity to Arizona’s DACA recipients and elevate our state’s image as a welcoming and inclusive place for all.
